Anchor
An HTML element that creates a hyperlink or an in-page navigation target.
Definition
In HTML, an anchor is an element created with the <a> tag that either links to another page (when given an href attribute) or marks a specific location on the current page as a named target. Named anchors β also called fragment identifiers or jump links β allow links to point directly to a specific section within a page, using a URL like page.html#section-name. The visible text inside an anchor tag is the anchor text.
Why It Matters
Anchors are the building blocks of all web navigation. Internal anchor links within long-form content (table of contents links) dramatically improve user experience by letting readers jump to relevant sections without scrolling. Named anchors are also used by Google to serve deep links in featured snippets and search results that point to specific sections of a page.
