Glossary

Duplicate Content

Substantially identical content that appears on two or more URLs.

Definition

Duplicate content refers to blocks of content that are substantially similar or identical and appear on multiple URLs β€” either within the same website or across different websites. Duplicate content can occur internally (same product description on multiple category pages), through URL parameter variations, or externally (content syndicated without canonical tags).

Why It Matters

Duplicate content dilutes the ranking power of a page by spreading it across multiple URLs. When Google crawls multiple versions of the same content, it must choose one to rank β€” and may not always choose the version you prefer.

Examples

Internal duplicateThe same 'About Us' text on /about, /company, and /who-we-are simultaneously
Parameter duplicates/products?color=red and /products?color=blue showing the same items
External syndicationYour blog post published identically on 3 partner sites without canonical tags

Common Mistakes

Panicking about near-duplicate content β€” Google handles minor duplication without penalty.
Not implementing canonical tags when intentionally syndicating content.
Ignoring URL parameter management in Google Search Console.
Confusing duplicate content with plagiarism.
