Lowercase
Text written entirely in small letters.
Definition
Lowercase refers to the small form of letters in alphabets that have a case distinction (aβz in English). The term comes from traditional typesetting where small letters were stored in the 'lower case' tray. In most writing, lowercase letters make up the majority of body text β sentences start with an uppercase letter and continue in lowercase. Writing in all lowercase is a deliberate stylistic choice in some contexts, particularly informal digital communication and certain brand identities.
Why It Matters
Lowercase is the default for most body text in standard writing. Proper use of lowercase versus uppercase is a fundamental aspect of grammar and style. In data processing, normalizing text to lowercase is a common step before comparison or analysis. In CSS, text-transform:lowercase is used to display text in lowercase without modifying the underlying HTML content.
