Reading Time

An estimate of how long it takes to read a piece of text at average speed.

Definition

Reading time is an estimate of how many minutes it takes for an average person to read a given piece of text from start to finish. It is typically calculated by dividing the total word count by an assumed reading speed, most commonly 200–250 words per minute (WPM) for average adult readers. Reading time can also be calculated for different modes: silent reading, skimming, and speaking aloud.

Why It Matters

Displaying estimated reading time on blog posts, articles, and long-form content has been shown to increase engagement and reduce bounce rates. Readers use it to decide whether they have time to read something now or should save it for later. For content creators, knowing reading time helps calibrate content depth. For speakers and presenters, it helps time speeches and presentations precisely.

Examples

500-word article~2–3 minutes to read
1,500-word blog post~6–8 minutes to read
3,000-word guide~12–15 minutes to read
60,000-word novel~4–5 hours to read
10-minute speech~1,300–1,500 words

Common Mistakes

Using a single reading speed for all content β€” complex technical writing is read much more slowly than casual prose.
Forgetting to account for images, code blocks, and tables which add time but no word count.
Rounding down reading time β€” readers prefer slightly overestimated times so they feel they finished early.
Ignoring speaking time when preparing presentations β€” speech is slower than silent reading.
