Orphan Page

A page on a website that no other internal page links to.

Definition

An orphan page is a page on a website that has no internal links pointing to it from any other page on the same site. While orphan pages may still be indexed by search engines through sitemaps, they receive no link equity from the rest of the site and tend to rank poorly.

Why It Matters

Search engine crawlers discover pages primarily by following internal links. An orphan page essentially exists in isolation and is far less likely to rank well. Fixing orphan pages by adding relevant internal links is a high-impact, low-effort SEO improvement.

Examples

Common cause: migrationA site is redesigned and old pages lose their internal links in the process
Common cause: new contentA blog post is published but no related articles link to it

Common Mistakes

Publishing content without adding internal links to it from related existing pages.
Not auditing for orphan pages after site migrations.
Relying only on the sitemap to ensure page discovery.
Confusing orphan pages with noindex pages.
