Page View
A single instance of a web page being loaded by a visitor's browser.
Definition
A page view is recorded each time a user's browser loads a web page. If one visitor loads the same page three times, that counts as three page views. Page views are one of the most basic web analytics metrics, tracked by tools like Google Analytics. They are distinct from unique visitors (individual people), sessions (grouped sequences of page views), and unique page views (removing repeated views in the same session).
Why It Matters
Page views are a foundational content performance metric. High page view counts indicate that content is attracting traffic, though they don't measure quality of engagement. Tracking page views by content type, traffic source, and landing page helps content teams understand which pieces drive the most interest. Page views combined with bounce rate and average session duration give a fuller picture of content effectiveness.
