Short-Tail Keyword
A broad, generic search term β usually one or two words β with high search volume and high competition.
Definition
A short-tail keyword (also called a head keyword) is a search query consisting of one or two words that is broad, generic, and highly searched. Examples include 'SEO', 'writing tips', or 'word counter'. Short-tail keywords have massive search volumes but are extremely competitive, dominated by large, high-authority websites. They also have ambiguous intent β it's hard to know exactly what someone searching 'SEO' is looking for.
Why It Matters
While short-tail keywords represent huge traffic potential, they are typically too competitive and too vague to be effective targets for most content strategies β especially for newer or smaller sites. It is generally better to target long-tail variations first, build authority, and eventually rank for broader terms as a natural consequence. Short-tail keywords are, however, useful for understanding the broad topic landscape when planning a content strategy.
